As creative as the market

Customer solutions for tomorrow for the filament manufacturers of today

Remscheid, April 29, 2008 – being a solutions provider means making your customers’ lives easier. For this reason, the primary focus must be on the customers’ success whenever dealing with innovative technology. With its global workforce of over 1,700, Oerlikon Barmag, the world market leader for spinning systems for manmade fibers such as polyester, nylon and polypropylene and texturing machines, concentrates on achieving this goal on a daily basis. The most recent example is the new WINGS POY concept, with which the company is setting new standards.

Every day, yarn manufacturers are faced with increasing pressure on the efficiency of their systems. This is true both for producers of standard items and manufacturers of niche products. In demand are methods and means that increase the performance and quality of the production process. “A spinning system spans several floors of a building, with the drawing unit and take-up alone requiring two levels. This means that the yarn string-up needs to be carried out by two operators”, explains Stefan Kross, Head of the Oerlikon Barmag Business Unit. “We wanted to solve this differently.” The result is quite literally providing wings: WINGS – Winding INtegrated Godet System – not only integrates the drawing unit into the winder and represents an operator-friendly concept that enables a low building height, it also ensures that the yarn quality is more homogenous, production is even faster and the conversion costs are lower.

Setting standards
The fact that Oerlikon Barmag is hitting the right nerve with its solutions is underlined by the resonance experienced with WINGS: unveiled only five months ago, the new concept has convinced customers all over the world. 1,000 positions had already been sold by the beginning of 2008. “A real trailblazer”, is the assessment of Man Mohan, COO of Reliance Industries, India, commenting on this revolution for the POY spinning plant.
But this is not the only sector in which Oerlikon Barmag claims to be the technology leader: in the texturing sector, an extremely hotly-contended business of fiber finishing, the further development of the MPS represents huge progress. Even four years after its market launch, this texturing machine remains innovative and attractive for customers the world over: the MPS CoolFlex model is the industry benchmark particularly in terms of energy efficiency, but even more so with regard to productivity and return on investment (ROI).
As a future-oriented company with a responsible, respectful approach to nature and natural resources, energy conservation plays a particularly important role in Oerlikon Barmag’s research and development. “We see ourselves as a partner for our customers. And energy costs are becoming an increasingly important issue for them”, elaborates Stefan Kross, commenting on the company’s focus on energy-efficient solutions.

Industrial yarn

However, Oerlikon-Barmag systems not only produce textile yarns. The innovative company is also the market leader in the industrial yarn sector. In addition to yarn quality, the cost-efficient production of industrial is playing an ever more important role. Oerlikon Barmag solutions for industrial yarn production are among the world’s most productive – and simultaneously the most flexible – concepts. The product diversity ranges from conventional industrial yarns, HMLS, high-tenacity yarns, extremely low-shrinkage yarns all the way through to coarse titers of up to 12,000 denier per spinning position. The broad range of applications for industrial yarns – including tire cord, tarpaulins, conveyor belt, airbags, safety belts, geo-textiles – underlines the demands made on the production systems and the process.

Partner for customers: engineering, support and service

Quality and customer benefit form the foundations of Oerlikon Barmag’s innovative technologies. To provide the perfectly-tailored solution for each individual customer, the customer also looks after the engineering along the entire textile value added chain. Support and services round off the company’s portfolio.

But the partnership begins before commissioning: the Oerlikon-Barmag R&D Center in Remscheid, the largest of its type in the world, not only develops innovative and technologically-leading products, processes and solutions for tomorrow, it also offers customers the possibility of conducting trials and tests on the pilot system accompanied by experts before the projects have been concluded.
